Austerity Tips that Aren’t Totally Boring

Curious Stuff, Eco Living No Comments

Oh god, we’re so bored of listening to people with no money worries saying things like “It’s just not that hard to cut back” and “Can’t you just let go of the butler?” Maybe we made that last one up, but there’s a grain of truth in our exaggerated point. Money advice is frequently impractical, boring and very draining on happiness levels!
Our Blackberry, iPhone, laptop, camera and iPad trade in service is about making the most of things – we give you money, you give us your old iPad, we refurbish it and give it a happy new life! It’s all about minimising e-waste and helping both sides of the coin make…. more coins! Here are a few austerity tips we’ve badgered out of the folks here in the Money4Machines head office…

• Go through each room in the house – no rush, just one every few weeks – and sort out any stuff that can be sold on auction websites like eBay or flogged at a car boot sale. Go at it little by little and it’s far less tedious.
• Stop paying for gym membership. There’s a whole bloody world outside the door! Take up jogging with a mate, play footy, go cycling, do circuits in the park, or do Zumba using YouTube videos! They’re all things our staff do in their deliciously free spare time.
• You knew it was coming…. SELL IPADS AND CAMERAS AND GADGETS TO US!! If you can’t find your gadget listed on our site, get in touch (we’re really not that fussy and love an obscure device every now and then!)
• Write down how much you spend each month on things like magazines, take away coffee, just-nipping-out-for-a-few-bits-and-bobs-from-the-shop etc. One of our guys realised he was spending more than £100 per month on take away sushi every lunch!

5 Devious Little Apps for Sneaky People

Curious Stuff, Device Reviews, Tech News No Comments

When you sell iPads, smartphones and gadget-y stuff to us, we ALWAYS run top of the range data erase tools to remove 100% of your old iPad data. We could be nosey and poke around on your gadgets, but our relationship with our customers (you lovely, lovely people) is based on trust. We don’t snoop, just wipe! But for the sneaky people amongst you, there are plenty of great devious little apps for that old iPad 2, smartphone or Blackberry, here are five of our faves!

1. Slydial
Compatible with iOS, Android, RIM and Windows Mobile. Basically it means you can call straight through to someone’s answer machine, even if they’re not on a call. A sneaking rating of 5/5!

2. iGotYa!
Compatible with jailbroken phones running iOS 4.2 or later. Take sneaky photos of anyone handling your phone – mates, siblings, parents or thieves! The picture and GPS location will be sent to a personal email address.

3. Loky
Compatible with Android. Create a secure space on your smartphone to store super secret files and sensitive data. You can even filter SMS from certain contacts into the secure folder to keep your private life PRIVATE!

4. Night Recorder
Compatible with iOS. Ever wanted to know what you sound like when you sleep? Or whether your room is full of noisy ghosts? Or whether anyone sneaks down to the fridge in the middle of the night to steal biscuits? Or maybe whether your teenage daughter really DID come home at midnight? Night Recorder records when there’s sound, but stops when the sound stops. It works when your device is in Standby mode too.

5. AdiOS
Compatible with iOS. Turn the tables on apps that might be snooping through personal data on your Apple device. AdiOS scans your installed apps and red flags any lines of code that mean your address book has been copied.

Is MySpace a Waste of Space?

Curious Stuff, Tech News No Comments

Like a great big hulk of space junk orbiting the earth, MySpace is kind of there-but-not-there to many of us. Here in the office we set aside your old iPads and smartphones for a moment (our office often looks like Doc Brown’s lab from “Back to the Future”) and decided to blow some of the dust off our defunct teenage social media accounts to see whether MySpace is a big dead weight drifting through e-space… or a dormant Jack Pine* pinecone waiting to emerge from the ashes of Facebook and Twitter to rapturous applause and maniacal laughter!

Advertisers
We’re not asking anything new; the downfall of MySpace was predicted as soon as News Corp. got its claws in back in 2005. Advertisers go with the trendiest option – it’s the nature of the “trend” to go where the popularity lies. Although MySpace is still a massively popular social media outlet, particularly for musicians, the buzz of its competitors is seeing off advertisers fast.

A Stagnant Platform
MySpace certainly hasn’t got any worse over the past few years, but it’s not got any better. It’s somehow bypassed the innovative reputation of competitors like Facebook to plod on as some kind of endless elevator music – again, there-but-not-there. No real innovations and nothing worth writing home about (or even making a song about and putting on MySpace!)

We’ve now depressed ourselves over a misspent youth following local bands on MySpace and looking for ourselves in the backgrounds of gig photos!
Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (shockingly, we don’t have a MySpace) for iPad trade in offers, great Kindle used rates and other gadget-related jibber-jabber. We also have a wicked Squidoo page and a chart on the office wall to show whose turn it is to make tea.

* These pinecones remain closed for years until a forest fire wipes out the older trees, then they open and begin their weird lifecycle over again!

Does Smartphone Gaming Get a High Score or Nil Pois?

Device Reviews No Comments

We already know you want to sell iPads, old Kindles and laptops to us at great rates, but if you’re as tech-minded as our gadget monkeys, that means you want a little more from your iPad trade in experience. So, today’s blog of wisdom comes hot off our own lunch break activities – what’s the deal with smartphone gaming?

Nokia
The N900 is harped on about by geeks as the gaming smartphone of dreams. PowerVR SGX530 graphics acceleration = very good. Optional plug-in control pad = great. Ability to play retro Nintendo classics on the commute = excellent! Still, as a functioning phone the N900 is something of a pariah to some of our resident geeks. Verdict = great for messing about but never going to replace the Xbox or usability of other smartphones.

Apple
The 1GHz Apple A4 chip in the iPhone 4S means gameplay is smooth, razor sharp and not eaten into waiting for games to load. There are probably more games out there for iOS than any other platform, but we’ve found quantity doesn’t always mean quality. That said, you can’t beat Apple apps for great puzzles, simple games and quick entertainment.

Samsung
We reckon the Galaxy Note wins the Samsung race, largely pipping competitors like the Galaxy S2 to the post because of its glorious 5.3” display. Simply put, the buttons are bigger and easier to press = more control = better gaming.

Blackberry
Business types need a little gaming too, but it’s not really the forte of any Blackberry.

The Playstation Vita is going head to head with the best gaming smartphones. Let us know what you think next time you trade in iPads, smartphones, gizmos and whatchamecallits!

Free iPad Apps that Are Awesome

Curious Stuff, Device Reviews No Comments

We mulled over the blog title “These Are the Free Apps You Are Looking For” but decided rehashing Star Wars for the millionth time is a wasteful passion best left to George Lucas (yes, you heard us, G.L!)
Old iPads and iPhones are a huge part of our treasure trove, and so with a trusty used iPad on the desk, here are a few top apps we love for every Apple tablet!

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design)
Hundreds of free video talks about everything from astrology to farming, game design to hacking advice (how to avoid it, not how to do it!) TED is basically an outlet for experts, freaks and geeks to say their piece. Full of great info (we loved Brian Cox’s talk on exploration), clever people and plenty of inspiration.

Cracked (satire and humour)
If you, like us, enjoy the art of procrastination, get the Cracked.com app to feed daily articles, lists, photo contests and videos to your iPad. Favourites from our own freaks and geeks include “The 6 Weirdest Dangers of Space Travel” (kidney stones? Seriously?), “Instructional Diagrams for People Who Suck at Everyday Life” and “Lost in Translation: 20 Baffling Foreign Movie Posters” (Robotic disco puma? Were we younger we might ROFL!)

FileApp
Ok, so not the most riveting free app for the iPad, but a simple, effective way to transfer documents from your PC to your iPad via Wi-Fi or USB cable is pretty essential. The free version is a teeny bit limiting (no renaming folders) but perfectly workable.

One more free app for the cheap seats at the back?

Words with Friends (game)
When folks sell iPads or trade in iPad 2s with us, we find this little beauty on most of them! Totally addictive, fast, easy and applicable to both the super-smart and less wordsy amongst us! Play with friends or connect with random folks for a new challenge.

We Love the iPad Planets App!

Uncategorized No Comments

Even your old iPad will run the brilliant Planets app. We’re based in the deepest, darkest, full-on Wuthering Heights-style countryside, so it’s fair to say a few late office evenings have been spent testing used iPads creatively by indulging in a little star gazing! We reckon it’s okay to veer off the tech straight and narrow sometimes in our blog, so rather than harp on about old Kindles, iPad 3 spec predictions and industry chatter, here’s a bit of the astronomy knowledge we’ve picked up along the creative device testing Milky Way!

• It’s really, REALLY hard to point out celestial odds and sods using your finger – lots of “How can you not see?? I’m pointing right at it!” The Planets app Sky 3D option is great for this issue!

• The speed of light is about 180,000 miles per second. A light year is how far light travels in a year, so about six billion miles (or as far as the M25 feels!)

• The definition of a star is “a luminous ball powered by nuclear fusion” We like how this makes us sound learned in conversations that permit the sentence “Actually, I think you’ll find a star is basically just a luminous ball powered by nuclear fusion” Use in conversations with small children and in-laws to best effect. And just for an add-on, the surface temperature usually ranges between 3000° to 50,000°C (the sun is about 5505°C, according to Wikipedia and the smug serious astronomer in our office)

The free iPad app – Planets – is a great way to kill time on late nights in the middle of nowhere, and becomes strangely addictive, especially during meteor showers when the sky seems to be an exciting novelty. The next one is the Lyrid meteor show in April.

iPad 3 Rumour Roundup

Electronics Industry Chatter, Tech News No Comments

Since your old ipads are pretty much our bread and butter, there’s nothing we love more than a new release! According to Techradar.com (the Anna Wintour of online tech gossip!), the iPad 3 (iPad 2S?) will arrive sometime around early spring to coincide with the release of OS 5.1. February is nearly over, so release announcements will either be short and sharp or later than we think. Two things – what’s wrong with our old iPads? And why are we already salivating to see the first post-Jobs Apple tablet release?
Two new spec/component issues are at the tops of the list – will the new iPad have the same retina display as the iPhone 4 and 4S? And will a magical new processor – the Apple A6 – finally reveal itself to our tech-loving lust-filled eyes?! Also on the hot list are an SD slot, more storage, carbon fibre case, NFC chip and magic beans (we’re not sure about the last one)
Some folks aren’t sure about the SD card slot; they want to see something simple like better wi-fi integration, maybe a thunderbolt port rumoured to be replacing the proprietary one? There will always be stalwarts who want to hold data in their hand and see it move from one device to the other, but we reckon Lion embedding more iPad improvements would be a good move, especially since Apple have shown little to no interest in tablet USB ports.
Don’t forget to recycle iPads by selling them to us. We’ll make sure they live a long life in the paws of some less technologically blessed person until you’re bored of you’re iPad 3. In fact, why not make a day of it? Sell iPads, laptops, iPhones and maybe even that weird novelty smartphone that seemed like such a statement at the time but is basically not user-friendly in any way.

Top Eco Tips for Small Businesses

Eco Living No Comments

Going after the eco-£ shouldn’t be the only defining factor of green commerce. Sell iPads to us to conserve resources, recycle Kindles and smartphones to set your green conscience at peace. But what about daily business practice? We deal with lots of delightful clients from the small business arena, and along with things like the best brewing time for tea, how to beat the local one-way system traffic and which celebrities we’d like to see thrown into a volcano, we habitually discuss how to make our businesses more eco-friendly.

Creating a green profile is step one. Rather than bumbling through trying to assess things like waste management and energy efficiency every day, set realistic goals after a full assessment. Things like dripping taps can waste more than 10,000 litres of water annually, proper insulation can cut heating bills by 30% – take the time to go over everything. A green mission statement should cover why you’re going green, the benefits, potential outcomes, the bigger picture, the little things and their effect (e.g. the dripping tap), and finally some reachable goals.

Waste management might seem like a small deal – all packaging and junk mail – but putting effective recycling and resource conservation protocols in place should be an essential part of the green profile. For example, make sure laptops and old iPads go to a reputable refurbishing company (that’s us!)

Go paper-free. It’s one of the simplest and easiest things any business can do. Minimise printing, recycle necessary paper usage and avoid the cardinal sin of paper waste – printing emails and memos! We went paper-free in M4M HQ in 2010 and are happy to report the world did not end because we stopped printing every email enquiry!

Get a Quote, Erase Data, THEN Post!

Selling Your Device No Comments

Still got a bunch of snaps on your old iPad 1st generation? Looking to trade in an iPad 2 but don’t know where to start with the whole rigmarole of data deletion? Selling your old gadgets can feel a bit like cutting an umbilical cord – so much time personalising! So many personal details! – but there are lots of great fail-safe’s in the Money4Machines chain of command, so don’t panic!
So, what’s at stake? Phone numbers, text messages, photos, videos, ringtones, job-related documents (we reckon after their gaffe a few years ago, the government are pretty hot on data deletion!), personal data, pin numbers (stop saving them on your gadgets!), home movies (yes, THAT kind) and a potentially awkward pick ‘n’ mix of data – they’re all on your phone, laptop or device!
We often think of our devices as being little private bubbles where things like photos of our other halves, pin numbers etc are safe, but when you sell that iPad used, it’s better for your peace of mind if you’ve deleted incriminating stuff yourself.
By the way, we’re speaking from the standpoint of a company that has received lots and lots and LOTS of gadgets bubbling over with undeleted personal titbits. We always run 100% data erase programmes on ALL the gadgets that come through our doors. Protection of personal information is a big part of the Money4Machines ethos – we need you guys to trust us!
To find out how to completely erase the data on your device, check manufacturer instructions or contact us and we’ll give you a quick tutorial.

Hint: One of the most common data formats we find is the humble memory card – check your slots, people!

Your Gadgets and Their Sad, Toxic Landfill Life

Curious Stuff, Eco Living No Comments

In the U.K, we don’t just trade in iPads occasionally or use M4M to get a bit of cash for that old Kindle (“No 3G?! But I can’t LIVE without internet access all the live-long day!”), we upgrade about twenty million mobile phone handsets each year, replace our TVs every three years and see about seven million working computers sent to the landfill annually.
Mobile phones, laptops and their gadget kin contain lots of hazardous substances and materials, none of which sound particularly at home in the natural world of Britain’s natural habitats. Copper, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and beryllium – they’re all present in small amounts in your old iPad, smartphone, and even that Nokia 3210 that’s been festering in the back of a draw for years!
Your gadgets need to be disposed of properly in order to minimise the risks to the environment, but they also need to be ETHICALLY disposed of. Guiyu, China, is the e-waste capital of the world, pretty much a province built literally on e-waste. A quick example – lead levels are 371 times higher in Guiyu than in areas just 30km away. Feel a bit guilty about flinging that old handset in the bin? Around 40% of the lead in U.K landfills is estimated as coming from old electronics.
But it’s not just the hazardous materials that cause damage. Non-toxics like precious metals, glass and plastics are found in most gadgets. Plastic, for example, can take…. oh, wait, we DON’T KNOW how long it takes to degrade! Estimates vary between 500 and 1000 years, but since plastic hasn’t existed long enough for any guesses to be proven, we’re still looking at a lot of shrugs and blank faces in the science department!
